The decade that was heralded with all the buzz and hoopla of the Y2k bug on Saturday 1st January, 2000 comes to a glorious end just a few weeks from now on Thursday, 31st December, 2009. A centillion and one things happened in the past decade, a decade that has been described in a myriad of ways by an army of experts. Who cares about experts though with you guys out there ready to tell me your our own views of the decade, albeit in the sense of the Nigerian Hip Hop scene. Nigeria has been blessed with not a few artistes, albums, tracks, labels and everything that comes with the Hip Hop thingy. Take a look at the decade and try an effort at comparing with the 1990s and you’d find that it’s almost as if we never had game until now. No question about the abilities of folks like Paul Play, the Remedies, Plantashun boiz et al who treated us to some curtain raising ensembles. You can’t take anything away from the 1990s as it laid the foundation for what we have now.
Enough of this effort at history and diplomacy , let us take the shot. I want to know your
• best artiste
• best track
• best album
• best group or duo
• best record label
• best event
• best MC / Rapper (male and female)
• best any other every other thing your mind makes up
of the past decade 2000-2009
Your choice has to be Nigerian as this is about the Nigerian industry. This is better than them awards where you don’t have any choice when they just throw names at you as the best even though you know your croaking village frog sings better than them. I remember for instance a certain award ceremony that held in 1997 to honour the best of the decade. Ok the likes of 9ice, M.I. Da grin, Banky W were already on the scene but they obviously weren’t anywhere near where they are right now. That sure came some three years too early. That is not a problem anymore because, now right here on Gidilounge, you will not only choose your own nominees, you will also declare the winner. I am looking forward some air of nostalgia as I bet some of you are bound to drop some songs that helped me kick off the decade in style. There is this disease about people feeling the latest fad or stuff is the best ever, I don’t want us to suffer from that syndrome. Think , then think, then compare after which you can give us your own personal best of the decade. I expect a lot of stuffs from the last half of the decade but hey peeps, let’s be fair enough. While you were reading through, the names just kept dropping on your mind, so fill us in on your choices for the above.
Enough time to welcome you to the decade of the Grammy awards. YES! Nigerian artistes will not only get consistently get nominated on the Grammy awards, they will win some. This is the beginning of the final integration to excellence. Borders will finally disappear and the collabos will now be the norm rather than the bootjacks a la Freestyle featuring T-pain. Finally, who/what do you consider NIGERIA’S BIGGEST MUSIC INFLUENCE OF THE PAST DECADE? Now let’s do here and now a Gidilounge community awards celebrating the decade 2000-2009.
