A Medley of Life and Madness

flag
by Japheth Omojuwa

Let’s start from the fact that it’s been a while since we last had any intercourse but a lot has since happened since then or has it? I’ve been pregnant with a few ideas but somehow despite my foetus coming of age, I haven’t been able to put my ideas to bed but not for want of contractions, more on that sometime though. Let’s start with an unusual foreplay.

Nigerian students remain at home after almost four months of a forced holiday which would have been more than enough to complete another academic gestation period. I don’t like to blame leaders because I always have this belief that there’s a whole lot of challenges they are forced to deal with which ordinarily are not brought to the fore of the public , but I can say without fear or doubt that this government i.e. Yar’ Adua’s is easily the worst we’ve had in ten years of democracy. The President is slow but more importantly the organs of government ain’t moving except only backward. Whatever seems to be still is actually moving backwards atleast in relation to the world. On Independence day, I intentionally set out to see Nigeria’s cup as half filled but how do you interprete a cup with a seemingly invisible leaking base? The basic foundations of governance are in shambles. Whoever is thinking of free and fair elections in 2011 only has to get a foretaste of that via the various re-run polls .it’s been business as usual except for the fact that things are getting even bloodier. Setting off from home to cast your vote is still actually a ‘do or die’ affair like one self acclaimed father of modern Nigerian made us realise during the last general elections.

Have you watched any Nigerian soccer team lately? For your own good you shouldn’t especially if you are allergic to watching a bunch of journey men trying so hard but looking obviously inept. Our players may labour all year but one thing is obvious and that is the fact that ,we no longer have world class talents in our fold. There hasn’t been any concerted effort to rebuild the national team since Clemens Westerhof’s relatively successful five year project (1989-1994). We had a team in 1994 that could have won the FIFA world cup but for pettiness and sheer naivety. That’s history.

If one takes a myopic look at the Nigerian picture, you may be forced to cry for a nation so blessed yet so plaqued not by uncontrollable natural disasters as it is elsewhere but by our own greed, wickedness and mediocrity. What takes a young man in some other climes to achieve in a year takes the young Nigerian a decade. What business has a student not studying medicine or any special discipline spending 7 years and counting at a Nigerian public university. How many fathers if they had children in such schools would allow their children stay at home with them for over 100 days if they had the means of avoiding that? The first word in leadership is ‘care’ and that I can assure is some sort of remote jargon to whoever has been the President of Nigeria since the strike started. They can authorise the payment of $10,000.00 (i.e. $20,000.00 for the two drawn matches against the real Eagles of Tunisia) to a bunch of lame duck footballers who have done nothing but hurt the psyche of this nation while they battle day and night against folks that are laying the blocks of national development through the provision of qualitative education even when every thing suggests the best we can achieve through our education are unbaked rather than the so called half baked cakes.
When you look at the BIG picture you will find that Nigerians as individuals are not giving up on this nation and as long as that is, We will get to the Promised Land. We have to keep the belief ,hold our faith trusting that Nigeria will outlive these Cannibalistic Cabal of Charlatans who have nothing but death and pain to offer. Funny enough ,I have met a few ambitious folks who desire to lead Nigeria sometime in future but theirs is worse as they have nothing to offer , needless to say I belong to a heritage that was intentionally birth to provide sound national and global leadership and I believe without an inkling of doubt we will. Someone once told me to tone down on the words I use in describing our failed ‘leaders’, If I did not imbibe that advice I would have called every elected office holder who is not serving the electorate a ‘disgusting retard’ but I won’t. Depending on how much I achieve my goals in a given year, I chose to celebrate or just recognise My birthday. This year I won’t be celebrating My birthday (Saturday , 3rd October) because I am way behind schedule in My year plan. Like me, I believe Nigeria should just calm down and rethink the essence of its nationhood. Spare a thought for Nigeria and say some prayers for our beloved country . I need your prayers too. God Bless Nigeria and God bless you all. I love you. Thank you.

Tuface: Celebrating The King at 10

tuface
written by Japheth Omojuwa
Year was 1999 when the Plantashun boiz presented to us Tuface Idibia or was it the other way round. Ten years on and he remains undoubtedly Nigeria’s biggest and most marketable HipHop personality. 2Baba as he is fondly called brought the glitz to Nigeria’s HipHop scene and that we have a semblance of International HipHop recognition started with the Benue State born Nigerian music legend. Tuface’s legendary status must not be confused with the watered down media definition of the word Legend. He is a Legend in every sense of the word. Today every body seems to have the ‘Genius’ tag attached to his/her name so much so that being called a genius amounts to nothing these days. I write for a learned and well versed readership and I know you will understand the purport of My statement if I say Tuface is a Genius’ Genius.
In 10 years, I’d tell you that the only award of international repute Tuface has yet to win is the biggest of all i.e. The Grammy and very few sane people will bet against him winning that. Infact he looks most likely to win that than any other Nigerian HipHop artiste. He is Nigeria’s great white hope for such diadems. It is understandable for one to chose to rate some other folks over the King out of allegiance to them but really and truly like one of My friends would say, Tuface is undoubtedly Nigeria’s biggest and that is not debatable. In preparing for this particular piece I spoke with a few peeps about the iconic status of Tuface and who they regarded as his main rival. As expected virtually everyone agreed that Tuface stands alone in his own class especially considering the number of years he has consistently treated us to sweet blissful sounds. I did not help the people I asked these questions because I actually came out like I didn’t know nada and I just wanted something to work with. As with the responses I got offline, My online responses were no different (check Face Off : Tuface and D’banj on this site to confirm my stand).
What baffles me about the Tuface 10th year thingy is the fact that no one seems to be bothered enough to celebrate this young Baba who despite his shortcomings has done more for the industry than any other artiste out there. I may be wrong but that’s what I think it is. Save for some folks at Calabar, I am yet to hear of any plans to celebrate our own amiable, genial and remarkably humble Music General. It’d be easier counting those that have not been blessed by Tuface’s voice on their tracks than those he’s helped to stardom and recognition. I also recently found out that he is doing a lot in terms of Philanthropy something that is as foreign to Nigerian artistes as sanity was to Kanye West at the recently concluded Video Music Awards but unlike Kanye theirs seems permanent . Ok, may be not that but you know what I mean. Giving to the society is alien to our artistes.period. Like they’ve learnt to follow the blazing trail of Tuface in the studio , they should do some copying too on the street attitude in terms of Giving back, they can and I believe they will .
When people commit bad and shameful acts, we understandably rant and shout about them, we seem to have a lil’ problem celebrating our own. Instead of that,we go around fabricating tales and murderous lies. Did he actually feature R Kelly? He has 10 wives and 50 Children, He breached his contract, this-and-that-and-this-that-and-this-and-that. It’s been 10 years and no one has consistently stayed that long on the charts and in our hearts. For me that is the singular essence of prestige and that’s why Innocent Tuface Idibia for now stands alone in this class. Let’s click our glasses to the man who helped to blaze the trail and who obviously still has his feet on the ground despite all the lights and height. As the past decade took him from Grass to Grace ,Here’s to a new decade of Grace to World Class. Yes o ! Plenty go happen.

Chief Capo is a Nigerian born artist/songwriter and hook specialist. Chief Capo was born and raised in Lagos. He left Nigeria at an early age to London, England and then migrated to the United States of America 6 years later at age 14.

While in the states he moved from state to state and finally moved to Atlanta Georgia where he currently resides. Friends and fans always asked how the name “CAPO” came about and if there’s an actual meaning to it. To end all that curiosity and speculation, its consists of the initials to his birth given name Chigoziem Azubueze Prince Okoli. He is a son of a Civil engineer and a Humanitarian. As a child he was always called the young chief which he retained in his stage name Chief Capo.

His inspiration in music comes from artists like MC Hammer, Nas, Jay-z, R-kelly, and Fela. His early passion for music coupled with an ever ending quest to entertain an audience cemented the notion that music and the entertainment field is his calling. A dream he lives and a mission that is very attainable judging from his undeniable vocal skills and work ethic. His desire for success outweighs any life obstacle or negativity that comes with the music industry. Watch out world, Chief-Capo is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

1.  Can Gidilounge get to know you better?

My name is Femi I spent my early years in Nigeria. At age 12 I moved to the US. I’m an R n B artiste with my eyes on the global market.

2.  When did you realize music was your calling and what genre of music are you into?

I discovered music in high school after which I joined a group 4th Coming.  We did a lot of work in the New England area in the US and after which I went solo. I sing great R n B music.

3.  You said you were previously a member of the group 4thComing, what happened to the group and what led you to make the decision to go solo?

4thComing was an amazing group at the time. I felt we had a common goal (music) just different paths. My family and friends encouraged me to continue on my own which was very different for me and yet so rewarding.

4.  Based on our findings, we noticed you have collaborated with huge artists like Cassidy and Pritty boy, How did that come about?

The right place at the right time that’s how.  I was at the studio finishing my session Pritty boy happens to record at the same studio he was getting ready for his session. He mentioned he had a track he wanted me to feature on, he played it and I wrote the hook on the spot. Cassidy heard it laced the track and the rest is history.

5.  In the Nigerian Music Industry, RnB is a fiercely competitive genre, what do you think you can bring to the table that other artists haven’t?

With due respect to all Nigerian Artistes, there has not been a consistent effort to internalize our music. What I bring is a lot of talents, a lot of flare and a determination to take my music into the international realm.

6.  Growing Up, who were your musical influences?

Soul legends like Steven Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson. Contemporary singers like New Edition, Usher, Black Street, JODECI and Joe.

7.  When did you decide it was time to come home?

I believe the world is a global market you need to have a home base and this has inspired me to come back home to my motherland Nigeria to build from base up.

 8. What do you think the Nigerian Music Industry is missing and do you think you can fill up that void?

I believe the Nigeria market has come a long way. I feel the void that I can fill is taking the music and culture into the international realm.

 9. What inspired ‘Ma Pa Mi’ and why did you choose Ego to feature on it?

Ma pa mi was not supposed to happen. It was my baby sister (Bunmi) that pushed me to record the song when I got to Nigeria. Ego was introduced to me by my Uncle (Gbenga Adeyinka 1st). I heard her sing and have so much respect for her vocally. To find out she was the lead singer to the great musician Lagbaja without no question she was the perfect piece of the puzzle.

 10. Is there a mix tape or an album in the works and when can we expect it to drop?

I’m in the process of signing with probably Nigeria’s best music label who are in sync with my vision and by the first quarter of next year by God’s grace my album will drop

 11. We at Gidilounge strongly believe you have something to offer to the Naija Music Scene and we feel this is just the beginning for you, what advice can you give upcoming artists like you?

Thank you for the kind and encouraging words.  My advice would be stay true, believe in yourself and put God first.  Stay off drugs and keep it moving.  Keep in mind Nigeria is big but the international scene is bigger.

12. Any last words for your fans?

I know a lot of you don’t me yet, for those who do thank you for you love and support and I won’t let you down.    To those who will in time get to know me I can’t wait for us to get to the top together.
